Whole foods and nothing but the whole foods.

So, the Whole Food Market is something I’m very familiar with from my US friends. But, you don’t hear a lot of people in the UK talking about this store.

Thankfully…those of us lucky enough to live in the general vicinity of Giffnock have the pleasure of being able to visit this gem of a store.

Now, before you enter you should know that you’ll need to remortgage your house if you’re planning on doing a full shop here. Also, as good as some of it is…and my gosh so much of it is so good…a lot of it is overpriced pompous pish!

The things I love about it….

Snapchat-1041096865

The loose aisle….

I love being able to buy my pulses, oats, grains, nuts and fruit loose. I adore using the little brown paper bags and buying only what I need. I love the absence of plastic bags and tubs. Unnecessary plastic! Plus, overall….it IS cheaper!

Screenshot_20170806-222057

Nuts…nuts….nuts….

Peanut butter on mass!!!! Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE peanut butter….and at wholefoods you can make your own, and bulk buy really good natural peanut butter!

screenshot_20170806-222101.png

Salted broad beans!!!

I also love that you can refill your washing liquids and fabric conditioner….so you can reuse your bottles. Again, reducing your environmental impact. It’s not any more expensive than the mass produced supermarket brands either!

The utter pish part, for me…is their fruit and vegetables. Yeah, they’re organic but they’re no more locally sourced than any other veg. And…they’re silly expensive. So, I bypass the pretty displays of vegetables and fruit and go straight to my favourite areas.

Behold…..2 bags of vegan goodies for a whopping Β£56!

I’ll continue to visit this shop to get the things I love….but will favour the good ol’ supermarket for my weekly shop! Unless I win the lottery (which considering I don’t do it, the odds aren’t in my favour!) if I win the jackpot, I’ll throw caution to the wind and do my full bi-weekly (I’m rich, it’s my duty!) shop in wholefoods. I may even splurge and buy myself 2 or 3 canvas bags for life! 🀣

On another note….we have our first house valuation next week. Exciting!

It wouldn’t take a Philadelphia lawyer to work out what I made for dinner…

My spicy peanut tofu was, as usual, amazing. But, the tofu I used tonight was BY FAR the nicest tofu I have ever made. It was actually chewy, rather than just soft. It has the same texture as paneer (from what I can remember), for those of you who can remember what non vegan food tastes like. I loved it and would highly recommend it.

Go out and buy all the tofu!

Enjoy! πŸ‘Œ

What can you eat…??

NowΒ this is the question that makes me laugh the most….

Let’s make this super simple….I don’t eat dairy, meat, eggs or honey. I, of course, don’t eat anything that contains any animal products…and so the problem begins if you’re buying pre made or pre packaged foods. But…over a quick exchange, the above would suffice!

People still don’t get it…..

So….whatΒ canΒ I eat….

Let’s see what I can think of, off the top of my head. This list will be in no way exhaustive!

I can eat….apples, bananas, pears, grapes, oranges, nectarines, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, pineapples, mango, kiwi, passion fruit, blueberries, lychees, cherries, lemons, limes, dragonfruit, jackfruit, avocado, tomatoes, beetroot, onions, carrots, celery, squash, turnip, cabbage, kale, spinach, peppers, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, courgette, marrow, aubergine, okra, sugarsnap peas, parsnips, sweet potatoes, peas, sweetcorn, mange tout, lettuce, cucumber, radish (well actually that would kill me….), runner beans…and many many more!!

On the fruit and vegetable front…unless a tomato or carrot is suddenly laid by a chicken, or smothered in beef dripping (btw it would surprise you what they coat fruit and veg in….beeswax, for example) I can eat them….in their pure form, or cooked by a method suitable for vegans!

I can eat a whole host of other stuff. So to name a few….butter beans, broad beans, Β blackeyed beans, kidney beans, baked beans, chickpeas, haricot beans, lentils, barley, bulgar wheat, spelt, rice, pasta, cous cous, bread (yup, most bread is vegan), bagels (some brands), potato scones (not all), wraps, bourbon biscuits, oreos, tea biscuits (again some…usually cheap), pumpkin seeds, linseed, chia seeds, hemp, cacao, wheatgrass, cashew nuts, monkey nuts, pistachios, walnuts, brazil nuts, raisins, oatcakes, crisps, popcorn…etc!

Again, in their raw state I can eat all of these things, and this is just the tip of the iceberg!!! You can brutalize any of these foods by adding animal products, but there is NO NEED to do that!!

This list is in no way complete…but it’s an idea of what we can eat. I’ve not even touched on substitutes…like…tofu, seitan, tempeh, soy meat, tofurky, vegan cheese, cashew cheeses, vegetable pate, vegan mayonnaise….or ‘milks’…you have cow or goat, I have…coconut, almond, soya, oat, hazelnut, pea, hemp, etc.

I think it’s fair to say that vegans can and have a wide and varied diet. The things we have in our basket compared to most omnivores are far more diverse and out of the ordinary.

So….never feel us vegans are deprived….because honestly, we probably eat a wider selection of food stuffs than anyone. And…honestly….we hardly ever miss the flesh and bodily secretions of other animals! 🀒

So…I ask you….what doΒ you eat?? And is it as varied as ‘us’?

Sleep is for the weak!

Today was supposed to be my ‘sleep day’ following a run of nights. Sadly for me I had to collect blinds from Glasgow, so I could only sleep for two hours!!! 😲

Plus side is….we went to Mono for our lunch. I really like Mono!! The atmosphere is lovely…the staff are super quirky and friendly…and the music is always good!!

The service is sloooooowwwww….as in you need to put aside a good three hours for a ‘quick snack’ but as long as you’re equipped with this knowledge you’ll be fine.

Today the theme was sharing. We had the platter…..πŸ’–

IMG-20170625-WA0006

The pickled veg is bliss!!!

And followed this up with the raw avocado and chocolate cheesecake to share and an oatly cappuccino (we had a coffee each…wwll, B stole mine!).

IMG-20170625-WA0007

My friend pointed out that the puree looks like a skid mark and now I can’t unsee it!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

The huge bonus to Mono is location. Ideally situated for a wee walk to Glasgow Green…which is what we did. Baby B played for a while before we found ourself caught in a storm of biblical proportion.

Trying to shelter!

Despite this severe soaking, we had fun! It’s always fun to be with the people I love the most.

Tonight I was craving vegan junk food, so vegan junk I had.

Pasta with garlic, chilli & olive oil. My comfort food.

It’s now bedtime. Oh…and the blinds were worth getting up for.

G’night! 🀘

Father’s Day…and he did it vegan!

Today was Father’s Day….if you didn’t know that (and you’re in the UK) then you’ve missed it….and your poor Dad is probably heart broken! πŸ˜‰

I am in the fortunate position (unfortunate when you need to buy presents) of having two Dads in my life. My own Daddy (Rab) and my step Dad (Michael).

Today Bette and I met my Dad at the market at silly o’clock πŸ˜ͺ. He loves a good pruch (those of you who aren’t Scottish will have to google that) round the many stalls at the market. He buys all sorts of rubbish, but insists one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure!

After visiting two markets, I managed to talk him into a vegan lunch! My Daddy does not understand why anyone would be vegan or vegetarian. He just doesn’t get it and I’m tired of trying to explain it. So, he cooks and buys vegan for us….but eats whatever he likes otherwise and we’re all fine with that. Btw….he is the biggest softy ever when it comes to animals too. He stopped today for 10 mins to give water to a dog tied up outside the supermarket. He stood pouring water into his hand for a full ten minutes whilst the dug drank. He feeds a family of foxes and has done for YEARS….but….vegans are mental! πŸ˜‚

Despite this, he accompanied us to mono today. Mono is a gorgeous little vegan bar/cafe in Glasgow.

We enjoyed jackfruit burritos, mac and cheese and their gorgeous chips….followed by a banana split and warm apple pie with ice cream. I didn’t manage any pics, which is a poor show for a blogger….but, I was too busy in the moment. 😊 However, I did manage a snowball to take away!!

20170618_141454.jpg

My Daddy Bear & my wain in Mono.

In my usual fashion I forgot to post the cards to the men in my life, so i wrote my Dad’s as he strapped B in her carseat and posted Michael’s on the way home.

Michael spent the day climbing or walking his dugs, I’d imagine. I did however see a startrek tattie at the fruitmarket and sent him it….he’s a big fan (of startrek, no tatties!). I considered buying it, but it wouldn’t have lasted until I next seen him!! 🀣🀣

Snapchat-1381856037.jpg

After a play on Glasgow Green for a few hours, Bette and I headed home for dinner.

Tonight, if I do say so myself, I made an amazing curry. Dead simple….sweet tattie, mushroom, onion, peppers and frys chicken strips in a lovely coconut curry sauce.

20170618_203243.jpg

Behold…my fantoosh fabulous curry, with bulgar wheat.

The heat today haa been exhausting, and I’m no doubt burnt….being ginger and scottish does that to you!

Tonight…I’ll leave you with this….

Do folk carry aboot their own lavvy roll?? πŸ€”

N’night….😘

The Tudor, Ayr.

Tonight we invited ourselves to a family meal. We obviously had to go to the restaurant they picked, so really weren’t very hopeful of a decent vegan meal.

We called the restaurant prior to going to enquire about any vegan choices they may have. Sadly, for us…they had NO VEGAN OPTIONS on the menu!

However, all was not lost…because the staff were super friendly and were more than happy to alter dishes to make them vegan.

After a brief chat with our waitress we agreed on vegetable tempura with chilli sauce as our starter. It was absolutely gorgeous….big chunks of broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms and pepper rings. It wasn’t at all greasy and tasted really fresh, with lovely crunchy veg. I forgot to take a picture as I was too busy laughing and yapping with my uncles.

For the main we established that the vegetarian fajitas could be veganised if we left off the sour cream and cheeses. We added extra guacamole and took our own coconut cream (as you do!) to use as sour cream.

20170531_194637.jpg

Gorgeous crunchy vegetables in a sticky hoi sin like sauce.

The fajitas were absolutely gorgeous. They had peppers, onions, mushrooms, broccoli and potatoes. Never would I have thought to include tatties in fajitas, but they REALLY worked!

Overall, considering the Tudor didn’t have a single vegan option on their menu, I’d give them 10/10 for our delicious meal!

I’d suggest they don’t sell themselves short and add a little sentence to their menu saying dish X, Y and Z can be veganised. Because, they pulled it out the bag tonight.

No puddings for us, as you’d expect, but that’s a tiny little criticism of an overall lovely meal.

Thanks for being so helpful and going to the effort of making a dish, or two, for us. We greatly appreciate it.

✌

Meal planning…Lists and Food Shop Prep. πŸ€—

The time has come to do the ‘big shop’ again. This time comes around twice a month….the rest of the time I just pop in for a ‘couple of things’, several times a week, and spend forty quid a pop! 🀣

I’ve always been very particular about the food shop. I love a list….or 4!

Rules of the process…

  1. Everyone involved in the process must eat prior to commencement of the list making.
  2. Only I can write on the lists.
  3. Items must be listed in store running orders.
  4. We discuss the options for meals before IΒ make all decisions! πŸ˜‰
  5. I must retain the written list on my person at ALL times following its completion.
20170529_225231.jpg

Can’t beat a list….

So, before we started I whipped us up a quick pasta dish. Our vegan comfort food is definitely avocado pasta…with some olive oil garlic ciabatta.

20170528_203019.jpg

I have very little to say today. I’ve been working…I’m starving and I’m tired.

I did find out something very interesting over the weekend though.

Are you all familiar with the new polymer bank notes?

Did you know that these notes are not suitable for vegans as they contain an animal fat known as tallow?

The good news is….

Scotland have confirmed that all their polymer bank notes are now suitable for vegans and vegetarians as they are not using tallow.

England have not made this commitment and as such you should know that your notes issued by an English bank will still not be vegan.

Screenshot_20170529-231326.jpg

Why they need animal products in notes is beyond me. It seems we just like stuffing death and suffering into everything we possibly can . But…it’s good news that Scotland have recognised the use of tallow is not ethical and as such made a change. It shows….being vocal pays off!

Let’s continue to be the change!

From now on….any English polymer notes I get will be returned straight to the store/bank, but I’ll happily accept and use Scottish issued notes.

On a separate issue. Anyone who knows us will know the tale of our little dog, Davey.

Davey was given to us as a puppy because he had a very serious genetic heart condition, he wasn’t really expected to have much of a life. Despite this poor prognosis, Davey the wonder dog has continued to defy all odds and is going strong 8.5 years later. He had a grade 6 heart murmur, is blind and suffers anxiety as a result. He goes everywhere with us and cannot cope without us being with him.

He has recently had an accident (common in blind dogs) which has caused a corneal abrasion. As he was ill from birth, he’s never been eligible for insurance. So, we’ve been paying for all this treatment without help from insurers. As it stands his eye has some vessels and we’re continuing on with medical treatment (anaesthetic is SOOOOOO risky), but he’s already cost in excess of 4 figures in treatments and we’re far from over.

We set up a crowdfund page in the hopes we may get some assistance with the cost of his treatment . It’s due to end in a few days and we’ve done well…but I thought I’d use my blog for one last push. I set the target at Β£300 and we’re nearly there, but as I said…his treatment has already far exceeded this total.

If you can donate, even a pound, it would be greatly appreciated. If you can’t, please include Davey in your thoughts and prayers. πŸ™Œ

If you can help…please pop over to his page and donate.

https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/Daveydug?utm_id=100&utm_term=BkbawDB38

If you can’t….like I say….send some positive energy his way. He’ll appreciate it!

From all of us here….

Peace, Love and Laughter! βœŒπŸ€£πŸ’—

Day 34….Hell hath no fury like a four year old with vanilla swirls through her chocolate ice cream…

Whoever coined the phrase ‘the terrible twos’ is an absolute barefaced liar!

The ‘twos’ are a breeze….the ‘threes’ are a tiny bit more challenging at times….but the fours. 😨

Oh my fucking god! Kill me now….stop my suffering…put me out my misery!

My daughter turned four last Saturday and she’s commenced her new age range with gusto. On Thursday she made an absolute tit of me in Next. I could see people staring thinking ‘look at that pathetic new age Mummy trying to get control of her little arsehole child’. But…we got through it and were both alive and well when we left the shop.

Today, we stopped for a vegan cupcake and coffee, from a wee shop in Linlithgow that proudly advertised vegan cakes, ice cream and almond milk. However when we got there he had one vegan cake and no bloody milk. So….in an attempt to save the situation we ordered an ice cream for Bettelicious.

She ordered chocolate and when it arrived she was not impressed. Anyone who has a child will know that a blue cup instead of a green cup can strike fear into your soul. Or…in this case…white swirls through the chocolate ice cream. I knew she wasn’t going to be happy.

As anticipated….she declined to even try the ice cream because she didn’t want white through it. To be honest, it went from bad to worse. She then decided she wanted crisps and as I was now pissed off, I made the decision she wasn’t getting anything from the shop. I literally walked in….handed the guy Β£2 and walked out. Without a drop of coffee, cake or ice cream passing anyone’s vegan lips!

I dragged my maniac child out the store….like some little Tasmanian devil. A ball of rage! This temper tantrum lasted a whole 30 minutes. Over a packet of fucking crisps!!!!

Anyway, she finally calmed down and profusely apologised for her angry outburst. And thankfully….quickly resumed her usual gorgeously little funny self.

Do they turn 4 and immediately develop a split personality? 😭

Food today has been immense. I had my usual smoothie for breakfast. For lunch I decided on a little bowl of bulgar wheat deliciousness.

20170513_150257.jpg

Bulgar wheat with courgette, broccoli and kale roasted in 1 Tbs of avocado oil.

After our relaxing trip out…HAHA! We came home and had an oatly cappuccino and a ruffle bar. Now…you’re not going to believe this…but…I have realised, I cannot drink oat based milks!! 😲🀧 They give me terrible stomach cramps. So, after all those weeks of hunting down oatly and stock buying….I now can’t use it and have a cupboard full of it!

I’m working tonight, so had a wee bite of dinner (despite still being full from lunch).

20170513_193112.jpg

Left over spicy chilli, some bulgar wheat and avocado blitzed in the processor with lemon.

I’ve got some humous, tomatoes and two seeded crackers for a ‘lunch’ over night. I’ve also packed loads of fruit and a soya chocolate pot for a midnight snack. I avoid coffee and tea at night, so green tea bags packed.

I’d rather be going to bed, but…work calls.

Sleep tight! ✌

My baby is 4!

Today my little love turned 4. It’s hard to imagine life without her in it, but at the same time it’s hard to believe it’s been four years since I first met her.

She is, without doubt, my greatest achievement.

She is my little eco baby…she’s made very little impact on the world in terms of her carbon footprint. She was breastfed until she was 3 years and 3 months, she was cloth bummed and she’s been a vegetarian since she was in utero! Who knows where life will lead her, but to me she’ll always be special. She is a really loving and caring little girl. She has a gift with animals and her character is phenomenal. I truly believe she’ll end up on the stage!

Yesterday we celebrated her birthday with her Papa (My Dad) at the Farm Park. She had a blast (there was of course no vegan scran) and today we celebrated her birthday again with her Gran & Granda (my Mum and step Dad), her Granny B (My Gran), Uncle Chris and Aunty Megan and her wee cousin: Violet and Granny L (my step Gran).

We had a bouncy castle, which gave us ALL hours and hours of entertainment! I actually think the adults possibly enjoyed it even more than the wains…if that’s at all possible.

IMG-20170506-WA0001

We all played outside the entire day. She was very much a happy wee girl.

My Mum, as usual, outdid herself with her food. She made us Sweet Potato and White Bean Chilli with brown rice and the most amazing guacamole. She had picked every item to ensure it was all vegan. The only thing on the table that was not suitable for us was the cheese and chive dip (and later, the chocolate fountain!).

20170506_145739

After the main she did crisps, dips and bread sticks with olives etc. Again, She had made the dips herself and ensured everything was SFV.

IMG-20170506-WA0006

She also made us vegan ice cream sundaes with chocolate ice cream, fresh fruit and oatly cream! (Forgot a pic…was far too excited).

We finished off the meal with a gorgeous coconut milk cappuccino and a vegan nut bar!

Overall, she did an amazing job of catering for us.

She said it took her 3 hours doing to shopping as she had to read every packet. But…she pulled it off. 10/10 for the food Mum…and 5 stars for the entertainment!

It’s been a fabulous weekend. Tomorrow we’ll be doing nothing as we need a rest from all the excitment.

On a side note. I tried the most amazing puddings yesterday….

20170505_221233.jpg

The BEST pudding ever!!!

You can buy these in Sainsburys. They’re Β Β£2 for 4…but trust me, they’re worth every penny. (I demolished all 4 πŸ™ˆ).

I don’t usually post pictures of Bette on here….but today is Bette day, so it seems fitting.

Happy BETTEday baby. When I count my blessings I ALWAYS count you twice.

20170506_174422.jpg

Goodnight from a very tired family. βœŒπŸ’—
